MARZULLO DECISIONS RUIZ AS THE TWO WORLD CHAMPIONS COLLIDE ON "SUPERBOUTS" IN RHODE ISLAND

The results are in from USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter Charlie Sampalis' (Sampalis Kickboxing) "SUPERBOUTS" that was held on November 26, 2005 at Rhode Island Indoor Sports in Warwick, Rhode Island.

The Main Event featured two USKBA World Champions facing off against each other in a non-title bout. USKBA Full Contact Kickboxing Super Cruiserweight World Champion JOHN "The Bull" MARZULLO faced off against USKBA Full Contact Kickboxing Super Light Heavyweight World Champion LOUIS "Bad Boy" RUIZ. This bout was scheduled for 10 rounds and went the distance. In the first round, Marzullo went right at Ruiz. In looked like Ruiz was content in using the first round as a 'feeling out' round. The judges gave this round to Marzullo. In the second round, Marzullo repeated his action from the first round. This time, Ruiz fought back, but two judges gave this round to Marzullo and one judge gave this round to Ruiz. In the third and fourth rounds, Ruiz poured it on. Looking like a little bull, Ruiz looked like he wanted to end the fight with a KO. But Marzullo has a great chin and is known to withstand a lot of punishment. Ruiz won these rounds on all judges' scorecards. In the fifth round, which Marzullo won on two of the three judges' scorecards, Marzullo was issued a one point deduction from referee Robert Kimber for constantly being warned about leading with his head and bumping his head into Ruiz's head. Both fighters worked the sixth round with Marzullo winning the round on two of the three judges' scorecards. After six rounds, the fight was even at 57-56 in favor of Ruiz. Ruiz had gone up in weight to fight Marzullo and it seemed that the added weight was about to have an affect on Ruiz. Marzullo came out in the seventh round and put constant pressure on Ruiz. Ruiz took whatever Marzullo had to give, but mounted no threat on his own. The seventh and eighth rounds belonged to Marzullo. Marzullo was ahead by one round. Ruiz came back to win the ninth round. The fight was now even with one more round to go. The momentum in the final round went back and forth. If one was rooting for Marzullo, there were moments when he had that round. If one was rooting for Ruiz, there were moments when he had that round. When the final bell rang, the fans looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders. It was clear that the winner was about to be announced and it was difficult to determine the winner. Whatever the result was, it was clear that Promoter Sampalis, and fighters Marzullo and Ruiz, gave the fans a 10 round sensational bout. After 10 rounds of kickboxing action, all three judges scored the fight 95-94 for the winner by unanimous decision ...John Marzullo.

One of the Featured bouts had ERIC "The Prince" PINARRETA going against AHMET PEPIC. Pinarreta was putting his pro undefeated record against a fighter with a record of 35-5. This bout was scheduled for five rounds. Pinarreta looked sharp and focused. Pepic looked experienced and ready to handle anything Pinarreta had. Pinarreta was the aggressor and scored with some sharp kicking and punching techniques. Pepic played defense mostly but had his moments on offense. Pinarreta opened a cut on Pepic's head in the second round. Peter Kaljevic, Pepic's cornerman, was able to get the cut to stop bleeding and the fight progressed. The third round ended with Pinarreta ahead in the scoring. The bell was about to ring for the fourth round, when Kaljevic talked to referee Kimber which prompted Kimber to wave his arms signaling the end of the fight. The winner by TKO at 2:00 of Round 3 ...Eric Pinarreta.

In the second Feature Bout,  JASON "The Trooper" BONACORSI went against CARLOS RODRIGUEZ. The bout was scheduled for five rounds. Bonacorsi, a fan favorite, continues his climb to reach his goal of winning a World Title. Rodriguez has beaten some of the best, but recently had turned his fighting career to taking MMA bouts. From the opening bell, Bonacorsi was putting everything he had into each punch and kick. Rodriguez fought back, but Bonacorsi seemed sharp. All three judges gave this round to Bonacorsi. Rodriguez turned it on in the second round, but Bonacorsi wasn't finished trying to dominate the fight. Two judges gave this round to Bonacorsi and one judge gave this round to Rodriguez. Bonacorsi poured it on in the third round and won the round on all judges' scorecards. The fourth round saw Bonacorsi unrelenting and Rodriguez doing everything he could to stay in the fight. Two judges gave this round to Bonacorsi and one judge gave this round to Rodriguez. In the fifth and final round, Bonacorsi overwhelmed Rodriguez and showed why he is of champion caliber. Bonacorsi floored Rodriguez with body shots and kicks. It looked like the fight was over. Rodriguez got up to finish the round. But Bonacorsi swarmed over Rodriguez not even allowing Rodriguez to get in the mandatory eight kicks per round. The decision went to the judges' scorecards. The judges scored the fight 48-45, 50-42, 50-42 for the winner by unanimous decision ...Jason Bonacorsi.

TONY "TNT" VENTURA, a fighter who wants to keep busy, fought an exhibition against ANTONIO DeLOSANTOS. It is always good to see Ventura in the ring. In recent years, he has ventured into professional Boxing. Although he boxes, it seems he will never leave Full Contact Kickboxing. This would be good news to all his kickboxing fans and the sport in general.

In amateur USKBA Sanctioned Full Contact Kickboxing action:
JOHN PUGLIESE def Greg Rodgers by TKO at 1:44 of Round 3.
ANGELA CATANESE def Annette Niemczyk by TKO at 2:00 of Round 2.
DANIEL CAMACHO def Scott Rehm by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28).
PEGGY MORGAN def Lauren Chunko by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
JASON CUNNIGNHAM def Jason Boulay by unanimous decision (28-27, 28-27, 28-27).
ADAM MADEIROS def BRIAN McDONOUGH by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27).
JESICA LEHOUX def Lauren Sroczinski by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27).
ALEX HORSMAN def Earl Iglesia by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).
Matthew McQueeney and Ken Watkinson Jr. fought an exhibition.

"SUPERBOUTS" was sanctioned by USKBA ACTION SPORTS and conducted under the auspices of the Rhode Island Boxing Commission. The USKBA Certified Officials were: Referee; Robert Kimber / Judges; David Hayes, Steve Ventura, Vincent Chapple / Timekeeper; Faith Trost / Scorekeeper; Christina Trost / Event Reps; Faith Trost, Heather Hynes, Christina Trost. 2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
TURNOUT AND TALENT AT 2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS AMATEUR TOURNAMENTS BEYOND EXPECTATIONS

After many obstacles were placed in the path to hold the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments, the obstacles were dealt with and the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments turned out to be a very successful event that reached way beyond the organizer's and Tournament Coordinators' expectations.

The decision was made to move the date of the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments to December 10, 2005 after it was learned that the original venue had permanently closed. Listening to the comments from some of the competitors and trainers, that had attended previous USKBA Action Sports Tournaments at the old venue and had now experienced the new venue, it seems that they preferred the Rahway Recreation Center in Rahway, New Jersey. The announcement will be made shortly concerning the 2006 USKBA ACTION SPORTS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The results of the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments will be posted as soon as all the paperwork is submitted and verified. Many people worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of this tournament. In the near future, we will be devoting a special article to these truly dedicated and giving people.

Although this year's tournament was an 'open' tournament, the expectation was that we would see competitors from local areas. Even though we had received many requests for Letters of Invitation, we had established and publicized that there would be no Letters of Invitation issued for this event. This did not stop teams of competitors from Brazil and Mongolia. To everyone's surprise, they showed up at the early weigh-in on Friday, December 9th, to register for the tournament. In addition, competitors from California, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, as well as many other states, filled Saturday, December 10th with two boxing rings of tremendous amateur action in Full Contact Kickboxing, San Da, Thaiboxing and Continuous Contact competition. Add to this a team of competitors from Ohio, a team of competitors from Rochester NY and a busload of people from Montreal, and the recipe for a great event had been formulated. This was the first year for the Chan Tai San Memorial Kung Fu Tournament and its participation in the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments. When everyone saw the Kung Fu Tournament competition, many people asked if we would hold it again next year so they can compete. From the reactions and comments of the spectators, trainers and competitors in attendance at the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments, this tournament was definitely a huge success.

If any accolades, other than already noted, are to be given, they should be given to the Tournament Coordinators and Referees. David Ross and Steve Ventura worked hard on their San Da and Kung Fu Tournaments and worked with Vladimir Borodine on his exciting Thaiboxing Tournament. Angelo Di Bella and Jonas Nunez Jr. worked hard to guarantee the success of the Full Contact Kickboxing and Continuous Contact Tournaments, with Jonas even serving as referee. As usual with many USKBA Sanctioned events, Head Referee Donnie Carolei provided excellent reffing and was so pumped, he jumped from ring to ring to assist wherever he could. David Ross, Steve Ventura, Vladimir Borodine, Angelo Di Bella, Jonas Nunez Jr. and Donnie Carolei have basically been involved with the USKBA since its inception. Joining this talented and dedicated bunch of great people, was semi-newcomer Chris Wagner. Chris had long been a fighter on many USKBA Sanctioned events and is now making his mark as an excellent referee.

Great photographs of the tournament are located at www.umojaphoto.com. Competitors and spectators can browse through the photos and purchase any photos they wish. The graphic above is a small indication of the shots they have.

Combat Sports International provided the Windy Brand Gloves for the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments.

In the days and weeks to come, we'll be posting complete results and additional articles on the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments. Thanks to everyone for making the "2005 USKBA ACTION SPORTS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS" Amateur Tournaments an event to remember. We'll see everyone in 2006 for an even bigger and better tournament.
