MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTERS ARE "UNLEASHED" IN REVERE MASSACHUSETTS

Revere MA...From the promoters USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoters Zack Tessler and Mario Ramos (World Fighting League)...

The World Fighting League presents “UNLEASHED” an exciting night of professional fights in its third Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event on August 6, 2005 at the Club Lido/Wonderland Ballroom in Revere.

This impressive fight card features fifteen matches.  Headlining the event is the return of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Jorge "El Conquistador" Rivera of Framingham, MA in his first fight in Massachusetts in over 3 years.  He recently fought current UFC titleholder, Rich “Ace” Franklin.  His World Fighting League opponent will be Todd Cutler of Daytona Beach, Florida. The Main Event title match features Jim Clifford of Whitman, MA who is set to defend his Lightweight World Fighting League title against Matt Martin of Framingham, MA. Matt Lee of Clinton, MA will have to defend his Welterweight World Fighting League title against Dyrell Walker of New York. In addition there are 13 other fights featuring many local fighters.

“I am very proud of the fight card we have assembled for this event,” said Zack Tesler, President of the World Fighting League, “All of the competitors train very hard and give a good name to Mixed Martial Arts through their dedication and commitment to sportsmanship.”

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is an intense and evolving combat sport in which highly skilled professional competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting including jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kick boxing and wrestling.  The sport is gaining popularity in recent months, in part due to the new SPIKE-TV reality television show “Ultimate Fighter.”

Doors open at 7:00 pm and the event begins at 8:00 pm.  Tickets are $35 for general admission and can be purchased at the door on the night of the event, on the WFL’s website www.WorldFightingLeague.com or through any World Fighting League competitor. Fight card is subject to change. All bouts are USKBA Sanctioned.

USKBA AMATEUR SAN DA U.S. CHAMPION BRAD BURRICK DESERVES ALL THE CREDIT

The new USKBA Amateur San Da United States Champion BRAD BURRICK (Ronin Fight Team, Michigan) deserves all the acclaim he can get. On June 18, 2005, he won the title on USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoters Steve Ventura and David Ross' "SPORT FIGHTING TITANS" in New York City. Then on July 20, 2005, the Macomb Daily newspaper published a superb article centering around Burrick.

These are Burrick's own words after winning the USKBA Amateur San Da United States Championship Title...
"I just drove back 10 hours in the car from New York City with my new USKBA (United States Kickboxing Association) Sanda U.S. Championship belt.  I must add I think the belt is verybeautiful and well made.  My opponent was Feliz Mejia from the Grapplers Gym who was currently ranked 3rd in the US.  We fought 5 rounds at 3 minutes each to decide who would be the champ.  The match went to decision and 2 of the 3 judges gave me every round.  Feliz Mejia was a tough opponent with his speed and foot work but I was able to do enough to win the match.  At one point in the match we were all given a scare as Feliz neck hit the ropes as I was throwing him.  After a quick look over by the doctors he showed great heart and continued to fight like a true warrior.  Several family and friends enjoyed the other fights and the event was run very organized.  I’d like to thank Steve Colegio who has been training with me for 4 or 5 years now.  Steve Colegio always shows up when I need someone to spar that is skilled (which is hard to find) and makes sure I’m squared away to fight.  I wouldn’t be successful without his help.  I’d also like to thank; Curtis Chapman for pad holding.  He has become one of the best! Nabil Baize for sparring, holding pads, and cornering. Melissa Miller for sparring. Louai Mishack for cornering. And my family and friends for the great support!"

With the permission of Macomb Daily newspaper Sports Editor George Pohly, here is an excerpt from their article on Burrick entitled "Champion Kickboxer Sharpens Skills", published July 20, 2005, written by John Hetzler, Macomb Daily Sports Writer...
"He's paid his dues in and out of the ring, paying his own way to compete in tournaments on the East Coast, driving 10 hours for a chance at a championship. He's passed on hanging out withfriends and cut down on his social activities as he begins a strict workout schedule for an upcoming bout. He sets up his own training regimen, working out in his drive to move into the professional ranks of the United States Kickboxing Association. San Da -- a form of Chinese self-defense and a martial art -- is his passion. "As far as sacrifices, there are a lot," Burrick said. "I do give up a lot of money, but that's no big deal. The hard part is time because you have to be so committed." His road to the championship started long ago. Burrick began taking martial arts when he was 9 years old, and his training intensified when he enlisted in the Army Rangers after graduating from Sterling Heights High School. Wherever he's gone, he's excelled, winning a world tournament last year in New Jersey. Others share his passion. In turn, he shares his passion with others, teaching students through his company, Ronin Services LLC, at Xtreme Fitness in Sterling Heights. "If I retire from fighting," Burrick said, "I want to promote." But Burrick's not ready to retire.

ALGIERI AND CAMPBELL VICTORIOUS AND USKBA AMATEUR CHAMPIONS SHOWCASED ON "SUPERFIGHTS - FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS"

USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter Joe Puleio (Top Kick Championship Kickboxing) held another installment of his "SUPERFIGHTS - Friday Night Fights"series at the Sports Plus Events Center in Lake Grove NY. "SUPERFIGHTS - Friday Night Fights" combined professional and amateur kickboxing bouts on one event. The amateur bouts were sanctioned by the USKBA and the professional bouts were sanctioned by WKA-USA. All bouts were fought under Full Contact Kickboxing rules.

In the two WKA-USA professional bouts, Chris Algieri went against Tommy "The Warrior" Rodriguez and Bobby "Jackhammer" Campbell went against James Chaliz. In the WKA-USA Title bout, Chris Algieri and Tommy Rodriguez kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for seconds less than the time of the scheduled eight rounds. Right before the bell ending the final round, Algieri landed a kick to the head of Rodriguez that kept Rodriguez on the canvas. Algieri earned this KO victory. Rodriguez came to fight...and fight he did. Rodriguez, a ring veteran, fought one of his best fights in recent times. Algieri, one of the brightest stars in the future of kickboxing, showed everyone he is ready for all challengers. In the second pro bout, Bobby Campbell proved to be too much for the game James Chaliz. Chaliz made his return to kickboxing in June 2005 with a victory decision. Chaliz has been absent from USKBA events for a couple of years. Campbell, always ready to take on anyone, wants to stay busy and is ready for any fights anywhere. The Campbell-Chaliz bout went the distance with the unanimous decision going to Campbell. While Chaliz proved he can go the distance, Campbell proved he is ready for major title bouts. In fact, Campbell said he will be fighting for the IKF World Championship Title. It looks like both Algieri and Campbell are ready for USKBA World Titles too.

In the main USKBA Title bout, BRIAN ROCHFORD successfully defended his USKBA Amateur Full Contact Kickboxing Welterweight United States Championship Title against EARL IGLESIA. This bout went the distance of four rounds. While Iglesia came out ready to take this fight to Rochford, Rochford's experience proved too much for Iglesia. Rochford showed an impressive combination of kicking and punching techniques. Iglesia never backed down and was able to mount his own offense that consisted mainly of punching. As a result of Rochford pressing the fight, Iglesia had a hard time making the Minimum Kick Requirement causing point deductions. The judges scored this bout 40-32, 40-32, 40-32 for the winner by unanimous decision, and still USKBA Amateur Full Contact Kickboxing Welterweight United States Champion ...Brian Rochford.

In a bout for the vacant USKBA Amateur Full Contact Kickboxing Super Lightweight Northeast Championship Title, MATT BERMAN and KYLE MURRAY squared off in a scheduled three round contest. Both Berman and Murray have fought in USKBA Sanctioned bouts for many years. This time they were fighting for the USKBA Title. Berman, the smaller of the two, has been active fighting in the New York area. Murray had moved to California during the past year and was coming back to take this fight. At the opening bell, these two fighters went at each other. Murray used his height and reach to his advantage. When Murray threw his kicks, it looked like they covered the entire ring. Berman was in there to fight and never let up. Berman was able to work on the inside. Murray was able to work on the outside and the inside. When Murray had the distance, he was able to land effective punches and kicks. In fact, the judges are required to write down the basis for awarding the round to a fighter. In most cases, they gave the rounds to Murray based on "more effective techniques". When the three rounds were over, the judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, and USKBA Amateur Full Contact Kickboxing Super Lightweight Northeast Champion ...Kyle Murray.

The third USKBA Title bout was supposed to be for the vacant USKBA Amateur Female Full Contact Kickboxing Middleweight New York State Championship Title. BRITTANY FARAH was making her fourth USKBA Sanctioned appearance in the ring. She was ready to put her winning record on the line to fight for this USKBA Championship Title. Unfortunately, right before the fight, the call came in that her scheduled opponent would not be able to make the fight. Promoter Puleio, not wanting to disappoint the fans and all the people who came to see Farah, still wanted to find someone to take the fight against Farah. Calls were made and contacts were initiated. By the time that Farah's bout was to happen, there was no luck in finding an opponent. Farah, having trained for this fight only to find out the day of the fight that it would not happen, was awarded the USKBA Amateur Female Full Contact Kickboxing Middleweight New York State Championship Title belt.

Due to injuries to both fighters, the bout for the vacant USKBA Amateur Female Full Contact Kickboxing Lightweight New York State Championship Title between MICHELLE BUZAN and DENISE SAPIENZA did not happen. It might happen on the next "SUPERBOUTS - Friday Night Fights" event on November 18, 2005.

In other USKBA Sanctioned amateur bouts:
JOHN SWEENEY def Peter Lepore by TKO (referee stoppage) at 1:59 of Round 2.
CHRIS PRESTA def Joseph Byrdak by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
VINNY DANGELO def Raul Cajacori by TKO (referee stoppage) at :51 of Round 2.
MARYANNE VIVIANO def Tamara Paulsen by TKO (did not answer bell) at 2:00 of Round 2.
DAN O'BRIEN def Ryan Nickel by unanimous decision (30-25, 30-24, 29-26).
Nick Newman and Kyle Knapp fought an exhibition.
AJ Schneider and Steven Castelli fought an exhibition.

Participating studios; Campbell's Kickboxing, America's Finest Karate & Kickboxing, Bellmore Kickboxing Academy, Kiaiki Dojo, Shaolin Self Defense Centers, Smith's Kickboxing Academy, Panza Kickboxing, US Karate Academy, Ghost Kickboxing, WKBF, NY Boxing and UMAC Dojo. USKBA Officials; Referees - Donnie Carolei, Pat Sullivan / Judges; Steve Ventura, Vinnie Chapple, Devon Cormack, Liana Walters, Pat Sullivan / Scorekeeper and USKBA Event Representative; Liana Walters. THE SHOW WILL GO ON FOR THE WORLD FIGHTING LEAGUE'S "UNLEASHED" IN MASSACHUSETTS

The situation for MMA in Massachusetts has been an unknown entity for the last month. While the Massachusetts Boxing Commission has said that they regulate the sport, local municipalities have not given licenses, or approvals, for certain venues to hold these events. Although the reasons for refusal of licenses or approvals seem to have nothing to do with any direct problems with the sport, certain unfounded and preconceived notions prevailed and one promoter, not affiliated with the USKBA, was forced to move his event to another location in Massachusetts. The week after that event, USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter Bruce Marshall was allowed to run his "COMBAT ZONE 11" at Lido-The Nightclub in Revere MA...with the Massachusetts Boxing Commission's sanctioning.

USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter's Zack Tessler and Mario Ramos (World Fighting League) have just informed the USKBA that their event "UNLEASHED", planned for August 6, 2005 at Lido-The Nightclub in Revere MA, will go on. "UNLEASHED" will mark the return of UFC Fighter JORGE "El Conquistador" RIVERA to Massachusetts. The current schedule of bouts includes:

Matt Lee (Team Elite) vs Dyrell Walker (Team K-9)

PROMOTER ODMAN REVITALIZES KICKBOXING IN CANADA WITH "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL"

In it's heyday, Full Contact Kickboxing was extremely popular in Canada. Since the advent of Mixed Martial Arts, an increase in boxing events and the stringent regulations by Canada's government, amateur and professional Full Contact Kickboxing has been on the decline. However, one would not know this if they had attended Canadian Fight Promoter Joe Odman's "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" event this past Saturday in Montreal.

Promoter Odman is a class act. His events are top notch. "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" was his second kickboxing event in recent months. People in attendance said that more spectators were at this event than the last one. Promoter Odman has been talking about running another event before the end of the year. He might have found the recipe to revitalize Full Contact Kickboxing in Canada. He is aligning himself with great fighters and people who care about Full Contact Kickboxing.

USKBA World Champion Angelo "The Italian Tornado" Di Bella, a native of Montreal, sponsored the event by providing exquisite, and large, trophies for all the fighters. In addition, Tanya Rossi and Julien Neri, from Angelo Di Bella Karate Kickboxing, were scheduled to fight exhibitions on "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL". Rossi ended up with an injury days before the event. That left Neri to open the show. As the first bout, Neri did a kickboxing exhibition against John Nash. Some of the loudest applause of the night came from the sections that had Di Bella's students as spectators. His students can really 'get into' a fight (see photo at right). Di Bella, and his students, are doing their part in revitalizing kickboxing in Canada.

The USKBA Pro Full Contact Kickboxing Welterweight Eastern Canadian Championship Title bout between Dany Descoteaux and Brad Fowler provided a shot in the arm for the sport as both fighters gave a kickboxing clinic with great punching and kicking techniques. This was definitely a big step in revitalizing kickboxing in Canada.

Kickboxing's "Wonderboy", Stephen Thompson spent more time out of the ring than in it. His bout with Walter Baric lasted a little over one minute. Give Baric credit for standing toe to toe with Thompson. Give Thompson credit for getting the job done. After the fight, Thompson was mobbed as he walked through the audience. It seemed that everyone wanted a picture with Thompson and an autograph. Although from the Southern United States, Stephen and his father Ray Thompson, has teamed up with Victor Theriault (Stephen's Canadian Promoter) to do their part in revitalizing kickboxing in Canada.

Add to the above mix Kickboxing Champion Ronnie Copeland (www.teamcopeland.net) also traveling from the Southern United States to Montreal for this event and Muzammal "Abu Zayd" Nawaz bringing a team of fighters from Ontario, and the recipe is almost complete for revitalizing kickboxing in Canada. With Promoter Odman serving up additional events, supporting these events will complete the recipe.

DESCOTEAUX DECISIONS FOWLER FOR USKBA CANADIAN TITLE ON "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" IN MONTREAL

In a fight that could not have been closer, and with all judges scoring it the same way, DANY DESCOTEAUX won a unanimous decision over Brad Fowler to capture the USKBA Pro Full Contact Kickboxing Welterweight Eastern Canadian Championship Title. The scores of the 5 round bout were 49-48, 49-48, 49-48, all in favor of Descoteaux (see photo at right)Both fighters showed the audience tremendous kicking and punching techniques. One thing that can be said about most Canadian kickboxers is that they have great kicks. Ax kicks, spinning kicks, roundhouse kicks... the kicks were definitely flying in the Descoteaux-Fowler bout.

The Descoteaux-Fowler bout was the only bout on Canadian Fight Promoter Joe Odman's "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" event that the USKBA was involved with. The event was sanctioned under Canadian Athletic Commission rules. The Descoteaux-Fowler bout for the USKBA Title was confirmed days before the actual bout. The USKBA was privileged to be involved in this event. Canadian Fight Promoter Joe Odman is someone who has a love for the sport that clearly shows through his production. "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" was held on July 2, 2005, at Le Medley in Montreal Canada. Promoter Joe Odman will soon be busy working on his next event. His events should not be missed.

The USKBA will be posting an additional article and pictures from the star studded "LES GUERRIERS DU KICK BOXING PROFESSIONNEL" event. With well known kickboxing personalities Angelo Di Bella, Ronnie Copeland, Stephen Thompson, Ray Thompson, Vic Theriault, Muzammal Nawaz, plus others, in attendance, Promoter Odman may just have the right recipe for resurrecting Full Contact Kickboxing in Canada.
