had already accumulated on the ground. But this time, the show would go

VLADIMIR
BORODIN REPORTS ON THE USKBA IN JAPAN FOR SHOOTBOXING CARD
KLIKFELD DOES BATTLE VERSUS
JAPAN'S WORLD CHAMPION
From the very beginning, everything was being
handled in a professional way. At the airport in Osaka Japan, we did not
have to wait a minute to be greeted. As soon as our passports were stamped
on December 5th, we were met by World Shootboxing Association representatives
Mr.
Kariguchi and Mr. Tanaka, who also served as a translator between
Japanese and English. An hour after landing, we arrived at the Landmark-Umeda
International Hotel, where everyone was given a separate room. Most hotels
in Japan have rooms which are not sized for tall or large people, so we
had to manage to use a bath tub which was a size of a barrel, and a bed
with the size to fit a 12 year old child. But that was not a problem. In
Thailand I slept on the floor. Everything else like food, transportation
and sightseeing was very well organized.
On December 6th, the day before the fight, I had
a chance to check my fighter's (Vlad Klikfeld) weight and to have training
and warm up sessions at Mr. Kurosawa's Shootboxing Gym. At the gym we were
also provided with videotapes of our opponent's fights, which was very unexpected.
In most cases foreign promoters are hiding any possible information about
the fighter you are going to face in the ring. In the evening, we were
invited to a dinner at one of the best traditional Japanese restaurants
in Osaka. The food was just awesome. One cannot even imagine what Japanese
chefs can do with regular onions, carrots and chicken. The taste of the
food was simply amazing.
On Sunday, December 7th (the day of the fight),
we had the doctor's check up, where fighters were seen by one of the most
experienced sport medicine specialists in Japan. Every fighter was given
a drug and anabolic usage test. After that we had a rest period for about
two hours and then the show started at the Osaka Civic Cultural Center.
The opening ceremony for
"S of the World Vol 6" was very theatrical
with confetti and flying ribbons thrown at the ring. Officials were
called and announced, loud and respectful, by one of the best kickboxers
in the world, former champion
Mr. Caesar Takeshi, founder of
World Shootboxing Association. Then the fights started. The regular
fights were three rounds each and tittle fights were five rounds each all
with one minute breaks between rounds. It was very interesting to see how
the Japanese audience was watching the fights in total silence, reacting
loud only when a punch or a kick successfully reached one of the competing
fighters. Totally different from our events in America where everybody
is trying to tell the fighter what to do on the ring. Also, very interesting
for me as a trainer, was to watch the faces of the Japanese fighters while
being hit or kicked. Japanese fighters do not show pain on their face even
when they are suffering from good powerful shots. Even on the way down
to the canvas, they don't change their face and don't show pain. It is
something quite new for me to work on with my fighters. It happened that
our fight was the Main Event of the evening and the fight before us was
the fight between a Japanese champion and an Australian challenger. All
Japanese fighters are very well trained and for them to lose to a foreigner
is a big shame. Fights were going very fast and within about two hours
fight number seven was called. That was the fight of the Australian fighter,
who was just a 19 year old beginner, facing a 31 year old Japanese champion.
Japanese fighter had to defend his tittle, and was not very serious about
his opponent who really looked as a beginner. But, we all know in the fighting
business that anything can happen. In the second round the Australian kid
throws a tremendous left hook right to the chin of his opponent and knocks
him out cold. The audience is in silent shock as the guy who got knocked
out is a real star there. Winner announced, trophies given and our fight
is being called next.
It's very hard when in the ring you have to combine
fighting attacks with the knowledge that you need only a knock out to win
the fight. Without the KO, the home town fighter has an advantage in everything.
And here, my fighter Vlad Klikfeld is facing World Shootboxing
Champion Ogata Kenichi, one of the best Japanese fighters and someone
who has fought the best fighters worldwide. On the other hand, you becoming
the best by fighting the best. We began putting our plan together which
was to take Kenichi out with good long distance boxing attacks along with
push, side and back kick combinations. At the very beginning of the first
round, Vlad delivers tremendous right strait to Kenichi's left eye. Vlad's
job has begun because I can see the start of the swelling on Kenichi's
eye. Kenichi goes on the ropes, in full defense, missing right hook to
the floating rib and round house kick in the same spot. Feeling the danger
he's in, Kenichi attempts to make a submission and throw, legal techniques
by Shootboxing rules. Knowing that Shootboxing allows standing submissions
and throws, I spent several weeks training Vlad in Russian Sambo that gave
us good results. None of Kenichi's attempts to throw Vlad, and get the
points, were successful. At the end of the first round, Vlad delivers a
perfect jumping back kick to Kenichi's chest. The bell rings to signal
the end of the first round. In the corner, I advise Vlad to make a big
blow with left body hook to the liver as I see a big opening on Kenichi's
defense. Round two. Here happens something I would never expect to occur.
At the beginning of the round, Kenichi is faking a right straight to the
head and blows left inside low kick right into the Vlad's left knee. Vlad
goes down and gets up and referee right away gives first standing 8 count.
This Kenichi move was similar to a Professional illegal move which was
used by Filho when he fought Rick Roufus in K-1. Filho kept kicking Roufus'
knees until Roufus could not even walk. I felt the power of that blow on
Vlad and began to worry. Usually, in kickboxing or thaiboxing, kicks
to the knees are prohibited by rules and I expected the referee to worn
Ogata for that. But nothing happened and the fight went on. I caught Vlad's
iron face look and understood something was wrong...a torn ligament I predicted.
Kenichi felt it too, and in the next moment threw his second right low
kick to Vlad's left knee, landing like a cannon. Same story, referee does
not do anything but give another 8 stand count. Vlad started limping and
the crowd went crazy. Vlad jumped in doing everything possible to catch
Kenichi. They both were deliver blows back and fourth, During one of Vlad's
right high kicks, Kenichi shows his real superiority and experience. At
the very same moment of Vlad's kick, Kenichi catches Vlad with a super
speed right low kick (cut kick in pro language) in the same spot (left
outside knee section of the supporting leg) as the previous two knee kicks.
Kenichi follows his kick with a left body hook.
Vlad can't walk because of the injury. Referee
stops the fight and the announcement is made that Kenichi is a TKO winner.
Sad, but what is done is done. For Vlad, it's a very good learning experience
by facing a fighter with more then 60 pro fights on his record and seeing
the world and other fighting systems and specialists.
Right after the fights, the official dinner was
given to the fighters, officials and sponsors. During the dinner, Mr.
Caesar Takeshi, president of World Shootboxing Association,
gave a speech about the growing popularity of fighting sports worldwide
and about the friendly steps being made between the United States Kickboxing
Association and World Shootboxing Association in the future.
After Mr. Takeshi talked, I was given time for a speech as the USKBA
representative. I expressed our thanks to Japanese promoters, sponsors
and officials and to Mr.Takeshi himself for inviting us to the show. I
talked about the next time we meet, we will bring a full team to Japan
and promised that next time we will be more prepared as we have now seen
the best Japanese fighter level. After the dinner, the major sponsor of
the show, Mr. Koichi Hatayama, chairman of the biggest Japanese
private security company ARES, invited best fighters for a farewell
party to a privately owned club. We were among those invited. At the party,
Mr. Hatayama told everybody that he was very impressed with the foreign
fighters' competing skills and techniques used in the fights. He thanked
all the trainers for delivering the authentic training methods used in
their work outs and welcomed everybody to come back again for future competition.
Early the next morning, right on time, the transportation
arrived to take us to the airport. It felt good to come back to the USA.
The experience was rewarding and promised a future of continuing relations
between the USKBA and the World Shootboxing Association.
We look forward to the next opportunity. I will begin Shootboxing training
classes in my gym to better prepare the fighters who will make up USKBA
TEAM USA the next time we go to Japan. I can be contacted at MuaythaiNY@aol.com,
or by calling 718-332-7993.

NEITHER
SNOW NOR SLEET NOR BLIZZARD CAN STOP POGUE FROM UNIFYING WORLD TITLES
It was an eagerly awaited Full Contact Kickboxing
bout between two respected athletes for the USKBA and ISKA
World Championship Titles. The maximum agreed weight limit was 172
lbs. USKBA World Champion RANDALL "The Perfessor" POGUE came in
at a cut 168 lbs.
ISKA World Champion TONY "TNT" VENTURA came in
at a cut 170 lbs. This was to be a scheduled 12 Round battle using unified
rules of the USKBA and ISKA
under the auspices of the Massachusetts Boxing Commission. The first few
seconds of the bout set the pace. At the opening
bell, Pogue rushed Ventura and kept on him. Ventura was able move back
and come at Pogue. Pogue kept busy and fought a smart round as he crowded
Ventura to the point where there were a few seconds left in the round and
Ventura had five kicks remaining. Ventura was able to shoot off a few kicks,
but fell 2 short of the mandatory 8 kicks per round. This was to be Pogue's
night. During the 12 rounds, Ventura had 2 rounds where he missed the MKR
(Minimum Kick Rule) resulting in a point deduction in each of the two rounds.
In one
round, Pogue was issued a one point deduction for kicking in the back.
In another round, Ventura was issued a point deduction for holding behind
the head. Pogue controlled the fight with side kicks and effectiveness.
Ventura was on the canvas, courtesy of Pogue, in three rounds. Pogue finished
strong by winning the last three rounds on all judges' scorecards. At the
end of 12 rounds, the judges were called on to render the decision. Judge
D'Agostino scored the fight 118-107.5, Judge Rita scored the
fight 119-102.5 and Judge Markauskas scored the fight 118-105 for
the
winner by unanimous decision and USKBA and ISKA World Champion ...Randall
Pogue (see top photo
of ISKA President Cory Schafer, Randall Pogue, Promoter Bruce Marshall
and Tony Ventura).
On Saturday, December 6, 2003, USKBA
ACTION SPORTS Promoters Bruce and Lucinda
Marshall ran the fourth installment of
their "COMBATZONE" series. Seems like a simple statement, however,
running this event was nothing short of a miracle. A few days before the
event, the weather forecast was ominous. Two snow storms were heading to
New York and New England. The promoters, Bruce and Lucinda, made calls
to all the fighters, the Commission, the sanctioning bodies and everyone
they could think of who was associated with their event. Even though the
weather forecast was tentatively bad, there was a chance the Boston area
would not be hit hard. The day before the event, it was now definite that
the Boston area would not be spared. Bruce and Lucinda did not want to
spoil what was to be a big event for the sport. But how could this event
go on? Who would travel in such inclement weather to watch a mixture of
Kickboxing and MMA bouts? Was the Main Event for the unification of theUSKBA
and ISKA World Titles with
Pogue and Ventura enough to bring people out? Pogue didn't have to travel
all the
way from Philadelphia...Ventura didn't have to travel away from his family
in New Bedford...ISKA President Cory
Schafer didn't have to fly all the way up from sunny Florida...Huzon
Alexander didn't have to travel from the snowstorm's hardest hit area in
Vermont...Renat Myrzabekov didn't have to travel all the way from where
the storm first hit in New York...all the Massachusetts Boxing Commission
people and Officials, led by Commissioner Leo Gerstel, didn't have
to come down for a weigh-in the day before and travel back to the venue
in the midst of the blizzard...all the fighters didn't have to honor their
word to come to fight...the USKBAbabes'
Paige didn't have to travel from New York
knowing that she might be stranded in Massachusetts...and the spectators
didn't have to brave the snow and wind for this event...BUT THEY ALL
DID! And above all, promoters Bruce and Lucinda didn't have to face
possible financial ruin by paying purses, venue rental, sanctioning and
insurance fees, hotel rooms and much more by holding an event that might
not have 10 spectators in attendance. They took a gamble that paid off
when things came together and hundreds of spectators walked through the
door. It may not have paid off financially, but the hundreds of fans and
competing fighters were treated to a good show and were not disappointed.
In a professional 5 Round Full Contact Kickboxing
Heavyweight bout, JASON "The Trooper" BONACORSI did battle with
RANDY
OLIVEIRA. This bout was originally scheduled between
Bonacorsi and REUBEN "Legs of Stone" COLON for the USKBA Full
Contact Kickboxing Heavyweight Northeast Championship Title. When promoter
Marshall found out, two days before the bout, that Colon had failed his
medical, Oliveira
(trained by Tony "TNT" Ventura) stepped in to
take this non-title fight. This was to be the hard hitting Oliveira's pro
debut. Since Colon could not fight and gave such short notice, Bonacorsi
was awarded the USKBA
Full Contact Kickboxing Interim Heavyweight Northeast Championship Title.
The new improved Bonacorsi proved too much for the powerful Oliveira. After
getting knocked down at 42 seconds into the first round, Oliveira got back
up and stood toe to toe with Bonacorsi. Bonacorsi sent him to the canvas
again. The referee stopped the fight. We're bound to see Oliveira back
fighting in the Heavyweight Division soon. His time will come.
The winner
by referee stoppage TKO at :52 of Round 1 ...Jason Bonacorsi.
In
an MMA bout for the USKBA Middleweight United States Championship Title,
JOAO
AMARAL (New England Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) met up with RENAT MYRZABEKOV
(Renzo Gracie) in a scheduled 3 five minute rounds match. Amaral has trained
many MMA champions. Myrzabekov is know for his kickboxing-tae kwon do kicking
ability. These two fighters met in the
center of the ring and proceeded to attempt to get the advantage on each
other. The action went to the canvas and Amaral gained the mount position
and began striking at the head of Myrzabekov. Myrzabekov was able to defend
the strikes of Amaral. Myrzabekov tied Amaral up and maneuvered into position
for the submission. Amaral defended and Myrzabekov gained control of Amaral's
leg. Myrzabekov applied pressure on Amaral's leg and Amaral tapped out.
The
winner by tapout at 1:55 of Round 1 ...Renat Myrzabekov. Myrzabekov
was awarded the USKBA Championship Belt by Massachusetts Boxing
Commissioner Leo Gerstel (see
photo at right).
There
were two additional USKBA Title bouts that didn't happen. MIKE
LITTLEFIELD (Boneyard) was to fight for the USKBA MMA Light Heavyweight
United States Championship Title. He showed up. His opponent didn't.
HUZON
ALEXANDER (Vermont) was to fight for the USKBA Amateur Full Contact
Kickboxing Super Middleweight United States Championship Title. His
opponent, Scott Weyant, did not show up or call the promoter. Littlefield
was awarded the USKBA MMA Interim Light Heavyweight United States Championship
Title and Alexander was awarded the USKBA Amateur Interim Full Contact
Kickboxing Super Middleweight United States Championship Title (see
photo at left...Huzon Alexander on left and Mike Littlefield on right).
One
of the brightest stars in the future of MMA is LEIGH MACNEIL (Murphy's
Gym/JBA). He's impressive and fun to watch. This time he was going up against
BRIAN
WILSON (Martial Arts Academy of Kingston). Wilson came in to this bout
with more experience then Macneil. But Macneil proved too much for Wilson.
It took 37 seconds for Macneil
to get Wilson to submit by way of chokehold. In another MMA bout, two newcomers
squared off for a scheduled 2 five minute rounds match. RUSSELL GRAVIER
(JBA) and MANDELA KPONOA (Dragon Lair) opened this event with a
quick display of MMA techniques. At 1:06 of Round 1, the end came when
Kponoa was able to get Gravier to tapout.
"COMBATZONE 4" was well worth the trip.
The blizzard did not deter the commitment of the fighters, officials, sponsors
or fans. Special thanks goes out to ISKA
President Cory Schafer for his commitment and love of the sport and
Bruce
and Lucinda Marshall for making "COMBATZONE 4" a reality. This
event also showed what could be done by everyone 'working together'. For

USKBA WORLD CHAMPION MARCO SIES SHARES HIS HAPPINESS
Former USKBA World Champion MARCO "Baby Face"
SIES recently became the proud papa to the future USKBA Female World
Champion. Michelle Sies was born on November 10, 2004 at 9:06
PM in Maryland. Marco said "it was probably the most exciting moment
of my life, especially because I had the chance to witness her come out into
the world", he continued "this definitely begins a new chapter in
my life and I can anticipate lots of happiness and joy. This will be a
whole new learning experience."
Marco went on to say "I definitely want to
continue teaching as it is a big part of my life. I will continue to grow
as a master and with my home at Kicks Karate. Helping it grow, I'll grow
with it. We have a lot of plans including opening a couple of new locations."
He added, "At the moment, I'm in discussion with USKBA officials and
some promoters about fighting for the USKBA crown. My last fight was held
this past April in Santiago Chile, where I knocked out Aaron Sharkey in
the 2nd round for the PKF World Title. Due to my inactivity in the past

RANDALL
"The
Perfessor" POGUE
USKBA WORLD CHAMPION
"COMBATZONE 4" / DEC. 6, 2003
On December 6, 2003, USKBA Light Heavyweight World
Champion Randall "The Perfessor" POGUE will defend his title against
ISKA
Super Middleweight World Champion TONY "TNT" VENTURA on TBBP's "COMBATZONE
4" at LIDO-The Nightclub in Revere MA. We put Randall Pogue
"In
The Spotlight" to learn more about this USKBA World Champion.
Q:
What
style(s) of ring sports do you compete in?
A: I compete in full-contact kickboxing and sometimes
boxing.
Q: Where do you train,
how do you train, who do you train with and how long have you been training?
A: I train at my martial arts school in Collegeville,
PA. I try to balance my training between periods devoted to skills,
conditioning, technique, movement, etc. I train alone, with my students,
and also at area gyms to get sparring. I've been competitive in kickboxing
for about 12 years.
Q: What is your occupation?
A: My occupation is martial arts school owner and personal
trainer. I have a small training studio at my school.
Q: What do you consider
to be the best fight of your career?
A: The best fight of my career was my first pro title
fight. It was in Lancaster, PA. My opponent was from Lancaster, and his
trainer was not only the promoter of the show, but also the president of
the sanctioning body. The promoter's wife was one of the judges. Then I
got knocked down in the 1st round. I came off the canvas and won a 9 round
decision.
Q: What do you attribute
your success to?
A:
I attribute my success to my movement and my constant study of the arts.
Q: Who do you look up
to?
A: Growing up, I looked up to Bruce Lee. As an adult kickboxer,
I admire Don Wilson and Kathy Long.
Q: What would you like
our USKBA Website visitors to know about your personal and family life?
A: I'd rather not get too much into my personal life,
but I am single and plan on remaining that way at least until I get to
meet the USKBAbabes.
Q: What are your thought on
your upcoming fight with Tony Ventura?
A: There is certainly some water under the bridge between
Tony and I. I expect a difficult fight. I did well in our last meeting,
but Tony and his spinning backfist are always dangerous.
Q: What is your ultimate goal?
A: I'd like to earn belts under as many of the sanctioning
bodies as is realistic, but I'd like to stay most active with the USKBA,
which has provided me with the greatest opportunities to travel the world
and grow as a fighter.
Q: What message would
you like to give anyone who wants to follow in your footsteps by becoming
a fighter?
A: Save your brain...pick another sport. If the quality
of your brain isn't an issue, train hard, watch fights, and study as hard
as you train.
