UPDATE: CHANGES IN ULTIMATE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 24, 2002

The 2002 Ultimate Elimination Tournament is changing:

  • The date is being changed to November 2, 2002. This is being done for many reasons including; conflicting events at the same time at the venue, numerous registration forms not received, sponsor contacts on vacation, commitments not fulfilled from studios, late posting of rules and regulations. We apologize for the necessity of changing dates, but we feel that the new date will assure a more successful event. We hope that everyone registered for the August 24th date will continue to be registered for the November 2nd date. We will begin posting the names of all registered competitors.
  • The name of the tournament is being changed to "USKBA ACTION SPORTS MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002". This will be the first annual tournament and all champions from November 2, 2002 will be invited back in 2003 to defend their titles.
  • There will be "five" Action Sport Divisions instead of "six". The San Shou Division will not take place due to another San Shou event taking place the same day. Our intent is to bolster our sports not compete or conflict with other organizations or events. As demand increases for additional Action Sport Divisions, we will be happy to include them on our tournaments.
Most people do not get second chances at things. If you are a fighter in Full Contact Kickboxing, Oriental Rules Kickboxing, Continuous Contact, Submission Grappling and/or Point Sparring, and you couldn't make the August 24th date, this is your opportunity to enter the "USKBA ACTION SPORTS MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002" on November 2nd and compete for the USKBA Action Sports 2002 Championship Title. To request a registration form, e-mail us at tournament@uskba.com. See you on November 2, 2002.

KALJEVIC WINS SPLIT DECISION TO CAPTURE USKBA SAN SHOU TITLE ON "SUPERFIGHTS" IN NY

It was the Main Event of the kickboxing/grappling spectacular event "SUPERFIGHTS" and it was for the USKBA San Shou Light Heavyweight World Championship Title. Two accomplished fighters in a challenge for top honors in a sport that continues to grow. This bout was so special that Steve Ventura (NYKK Gym) was called in to be the Official USKBA Representative for this bout as well as future San Shou bouts. The contenders for the title were USKBA Full Contact Super Middleweight World Champion TOMMY "Bee" BOTTONE and USKBA Full Contact Super Welterweight International Champion PETER "F-16" KALJEVIC. Both fighters had experience in other fighting sports. Both fighters have fought the best. Both fighters wanted top honors. Details of this fight will be posted shortly, as USKBA Representative Steve Ventura is completing the article. Simply put, Kaljevic won a split decision and the championship title. Mr. Ventura will definitely attempt to unsimplify this bout. Congratulations to both fighters for bringing something new and exciting to "SUPERFIGHTS" and the fans.

The Main Event of Bottone/Kaljevic proved to be the icing on the cake for USKBA Promoter Joseph Puleio's (Top Kick Championship Kickboxing) "SUPERFIGHTS" held on July 26, 2002 at SportsPlus Event Center in Lake Grove NY. This packed event, from beginning to end, showcased great fights in Full Contact Kickboxing, Grappling and San Shou.

In a professional Full Contact 4 Round bout for the USKBA Super Featherweight NYS Championship Title, former USKBA Champion KEITH "The Hammer" NESBITT faced off against BOBBY CAMPBELL. The first round saw Nesbitt and Campbell being cautious but providing kicks and punches galore. Nesbitt won the round on all three judge's scorecards. The second round had the opposite effect as Campbell won the round on all 3 judge's scorecards. The third round was close enough to have two judges giving it to Campbell and one judge giving it to Nesbitt. The last round turned into the championship round. Nesbitt seemed too slow for Campbell and fought the entire round as if he could smell victory. All 3 judges gave the round to Campbell. The scoring was as follows; Judge Kanehl scored the fight 38-38 even, Judge Cormack scored the fight 39-37 and Judge Ventura scored the fight 39-37 for the winner by majority decision... Bobby Campbell.

In a Grappling 6 minute bout for the USKBA Light Heavyweight NYS Championship Title, USKBA Full Contact Champion KADIR squared off against CHRIS ORLANDO. Orlando has excelled on past "SUPERFIGHTS" events and has become one of the best grapplers in the area. Kadir, although his forte is Full Contact Kickboxing, has also fought in many other styles of fighting. The match went to the canvas quickly as both fighters tried to gain the advantage. This match seemed a contest of who could get the other to submit the fastest. At one point, Orlando grabbed Kadir's gi by the neck and attempted a choke. The positioning was wrong and Kadir was able to get out of Orlando's grasp. Shortly thereafter, Orlando attempted the choke on Kadir again. This time, Orlando was successful and put Kadir to sleep. Orlando explained after fight that he had the perfect positioning as he was able to put pressure on Kadir's carotid artery. The winner of the bout at 1:56 was... Chris Orlando.

In an amateur Full Contact 3 Round bout for the USKBA Super Lightweight Northeast Championship Title, KYLE MURRAY and CHRIS ALGIERI faced off against each other. In this contest between two exceptional fighters that went the distance, the action was non stop. It was hard to decide if the fighters or the judges had the hardest job. The first round saw both fighters coming out at the bell and beginning their respective offenses. Two judges gave the round to Algieri while one judge gave the round to Murray. The action and offense didn't stop with the first round. Both fighters continued it for the next four minutes. Although the decision of which fighter won the next two rounds was hard to determine, all three judges gave the rounds to Algieri. Judge Cormack scored the fight 29-28 and Judges Kanehl and Ross scored the fight 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision... Chris Algieri.

In another amateur Full Contact 3 Round bout, CHRISSY YANDOLLI and CORINNE MANGAN faced off against each other for the USKBA Female Lightweight L.I. Championship Title. Both these fighters are well known and respected. Yandolli owns other USKBA Championship Titles and Mangan was fighting for her first. Yandolli tried to take control of the first round by displaying punching and kicking technique. Mangan wouldn't back down and showed her own display of technique. The three judges gave the first round to Yandolli. The second round saw Mangan getting more aggressive, however it seemed that effectiveness was on Yandolli's side. Referee Pat Sullivan had cautioned Mangan for holding. Two judges gave the round to Yandolli and one judge had given it to Mangan. The final round saw Mangan giving it all she had. Yandolli is not one to give up even if she feels she's ahead. Again Mangan was warned by the referee. Towards the end of the round, Mangan received a one point deduction after not heeding the warnings. At the end of three rounds, Judges Cormack and Ross scored the fight 30-26 and Judge Kanehl scored the fight 29-27 in favor of the winner by unanimous decision... Chrissy Yandolli.

In another amateur Full Contact 3 Round bout, JENNIFER SWEENEY and JENNY NEDELL faced off against each other for the USKBA Female Welterweight L.I. Championship Title. This bout went the distance and had to be the toughest bout to score. No round had all three judges agreeing on who won it. The first round should have been an indication to the outcome. One judge gave the round to Sweeney, one judge gave the round to Nedell and one judge scored it even. The second round had two judges giving the round to Sweeney and one judge giving it to Nedell. The final round had two judges giving the round to Nedell and one judge giving the round to Sweeney. After three hard fought rounds, this bout was declared a draw.

SPEEDY RECOVERY WISHES FOR USKBA PROMOTER BRUCE MARSHALL

There's always something that throws one back in to reality when one's mind is filled with major thoughts of minor problems. USKBA Promoter Bruce Marshall (Trilogy/Black Belt Productions) has had his own problems lately. His health had been in question. After undergoing a procedure recently, he seems to be on the road to recovery. He is receiving great care from his wife Lucinda and son Marley. When reached by phone, Bruce just wanted to let everyone know he had to cancel his scheduled events on August 2nd and September 6th but assured everyone that he will be back, better than ever, for his scheduled event on October 25th.

Bruce has been promoting USKBA Sanctioned events for years. Bruce has been promoting events for many many years. Most people in our field know Bruce Marshall. For those who don't know him, he happens to be a pioneer in kickboxing. We know he will be back promoting, and just like he says..."bigger and better". The thoughts of all USKBA Associates, Promoters, Member Clubs and Licensed Sportfighters are with Bruce. He is one of our family.

Anyone wishing to send messages of support to Bruce Marshall, can e-mail him at bruce_marshall@uskba.com.
